At the end of the project you will be able to:
  • Formulate questions concerning viral diseases in molecular terms;
  • Describe the molecular mechanisms underlying viral infections and the generation of new viruses;
  • Describe methods for acquiring insight into these processes;
  • Formulate a hypothesis for explaining viral behaviour or for developing a remedy for viral diseases; and to
  • Convince others of the importance of this hypothesis.
Inhoud
During the Viral Diseases project each of the project groups will work on one of the following three viruses: HIV (the AIDS virus), the Ebola virus or the influenza virus (or flu virus). These three viruses pose serious health risks to human beings. The first stage of every viral disease is an infection, and every viral disease leads to the production of new viruses by the infected cells, which die afterwards. The molecular aspects of these processes will be mapped out. Subsequently, a research hypothesis will be formulated which can boost research in this area. Finally, at the closing symposium the detailed problem analysis and the formulated hypothesis will be presented to the other project groups in the form of a research grant application.
Molecular interactions and physical-chemical processes in and on living cells underlie all viral infections. That is why insights from biochemistry and bio-organic chemistry, structural biology, physical chemistry, and of course molecular virology and cell biology will be discussed during the project. As the focus is on analysing and solving practical problems, measuring methods will also be dealt with in detail. Finally, this project contains an exercise in submitting a research grant application
