After completing this course, students will have:

The study of European governance is not based on one single theoretical or methodological approach. Rather, and perhaps even more so than other subfields of public administration, it combines insights from law, economics, econometrics, psychology, sociology and political science in order to understand phenomena such as, for example, decision-making, institutional change, working practices, separation of powers, good governance, cooperation and conflict.
This course aims to apply such a multidisciplinary perspective on the state of the art of the European Union, in order to understand the changes that are taking place at the European scene as a result of enlargement, demands for democratization, effectiveness, widening and deepening.
The course will hone in on phenomena such as the growth of agencies, comitology, executive control, the democratic deficit, regulatory networks and decision-making and cover both formal as well as informal working practices.
The weekly sessions are in seminar format. This means that you are expected to write short essays that serve as a basis for the discussions in the group. In addition to these weekly sessions, the course includes two-days of fieldwork in Brussels in order to observe the state of the art in the EU's workings.
Please note that this is not an introductory course. Participants are required to have a basic understanding of the workings of the European Union before registering for this course; e.g. by having completed “European Governance” (USG4180), or “Foundations of European Union Law” (RGLBUS120).
