This course provides state-of-the art expertise in sustainable finance. It is closely linked to currently debated topics in the Utrecht Sustainable Finance Lab (SFL) of the Utrecht Sustainability Institute.

In this course on Sustainable Finance we will focus on how climate change (and the prevention of it) could affect financial institutions. Financial institutions are affected by global warming because the assets on their balance sheet constitute exposures to affected firms, governments and households in the real economy. Asset depreciations could result from both the effects of climate change (like the flooding of cities or loss of fertile lands) and from increased environmental regulation that curtails the business of polluting firms, or clean-tech innovation that disrupts businesses, possibly even making them obsolete. Climate change mitigation and adaptation also offer economic opportunities.
In the course you will make a group assignment in which you are asked to provide an in-depth analysis of how one existing financial institution, e.g. a specific bank, an insurance company or a pension fund, could be affected by a specific risk caused by climate change or the transition towards an energy system that will stabilize the global climate.
