Course goals
Learning objectives
At the end of the course the students is will be able to:
•      Formulate an interesting research question;
•      Develop a research plan to answer the research question;
•      Understand the mechanics of major research methods in the field of international management;
•      Create meaningful associations between questions and methods.
Content
The main aim of the course is to provide students with the tools to develop their master thesis from beginning to end. The course illustrates the key steps of the research process and delves into the major data collection and data analysis techniques appropriate for quantitative and qualitative information. In doing so, the course tries to answer questions such as: (1) What makes a research question interesting? (2) What is the structure of a scientific paper and, consequently, of a thesis? (3) What is the purpose of a literature review and how to make a good one? (4) When information sought is not contained in any archive, how can a survey be developed? (5) How is a case study based on qualitative information designed and implemented? (6) How do companies collect and analyse qualitative information on consumer tastes? Throughout the course, students are required to formulate an interesting and relevant research question and are coached in the development of a short empirical paper.

Format
One or two weekly meetings (seminar sessions) plus presentation sessions at the end.

Assessment method
  • Weekly essays based on the literature (30%, group)
  • Presentation of the empirical paper (20%, individual)
  • Empirical paper (50%, individual)
