Learning objectives
At the end of the course the student is able to:
  • Understand the main developments in Fintech in recent years
  • Assess the contribution of pivotal research papers in their respective field of specialisation;
  • Formulate a relevant research question;
  • Formulate a research plan to answer the research question;
  • Apply research methods.
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the topic of Fintech and teach them the skills necessary to successfully complete their master thesis. Students are first exposed to ongoing research projects, especially those related to developments in financial technology (Fintech) like crowdfunding, cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. Students present their work-in-progress and elaborate on their research strategy. What does the literature say about the research question at hand? Why is the research question relevant? What is the research about? In case of an empirical study, what data are needed? How are these obtained? And so on. If available, some preliminary research results will be presented. Each student is then challenged to formulate their own research question about a topic of their interest. For that students first have to conduct a literature review relevant for their research topic. Next, each student formulates their own research question that subsequently will be presented and discussed in class. Students are also expected to develop their research strategy: (i) theoretical, (ii) empirical, (iii) experimental, or any combination.

Format
Weekly meetings, possibly in combination with tutorials.

Assessment method
  • Short research paper with a literature review and a research question (80%, individual)
  • Presentation of the paper (20%, individual)
