Students will analyse present-day representations of cultural or national identity. These will be viewed against the backdrop of literary and historical representations. In doing so, students will read research in media studies, (post)colonial studies, intercultural communication, anthropology, imagology, discourse analysis and linguistics. We will review media coverage of topical issues, advertisements and commercials. The role of English as a lingua franca in its different manifestations is a recurrent element. In the final weeks of the course students are encouraged to explore additional fields of their preference and formulate research proposals. Students with an interest in teaching will be given the opportunity to propose lesson plans.
