This course will enable students to gain a sound basic knowledge of the key stages in the development of the modern Hispanic culture by examining them in their social, political, economic and historical context. In order to achieve this goal, student attendance is compulsory.

This introductory course offers a wide-ranging survey of Spanish and Spanish-American history which will address social, cultural, economic and geopolitical topics in order to delve into the complexities that constitute what is what is known as the "Hispanic World". In addition, the course provides an overview of cultural studies theory on topics such as gender, race, nation, and popular mass media as applied to Hispanic cultural texts. After completing the course students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the main social, political and cultural features of the region.
