Course goals

Objectives:

1.To understand the dynamic properties of the macromolecular membrane system of a cell and how deregulation of membrane homeostasis leads to systemic failure and disease. To appreciate how this knowledge provides a basis for the development of novel drugs to fight infections, cancer and obesity. In particular by learning:

a) Physicochemical properties of membrane lipids in relation to their cellular functions
b) Molecular principles of membrane biogenesis and protein insertion into bilayers
c) Regulatory mechanisms of membrane homeostasis
d) Strategies for the development of membrane active drugs

2) To become familiar with various experimental approaches to investigate the dynamic properties of macromolecular membrane systems, ranging from yeast genetics to biophysical studies on model membranes.

3) To be capable of critically reading a research article and/or grant application on macromolecular membrane systems by:
a) Determining the research goal
b) Understanding the approach used or proposed (methodology/techniques)
c) Identifying the critical experiments
d) Getting the take-home message of the article or application
e) Proposing new research lines/experiments as follow-up or complementation
