After this course:
  • the student has learned about the different rights contained in the human rights regime and is able to distinguish them on the basis of their nature and characteristics.
  • the student has gained an understanding of the various elements - and their interplay - involved in the multi-facetted field of international law and human rights.
  • the student is able to identify and, where appropriate, distinguish between legal, moral, political and other considerations and arguments.
  • the student has developed the capabilities and skills to analyze the relevant facts from a legal (human rights) perspective.
  • the student has developed the capabilities and skills to research, discuss and write about relevant topics in the field of international law and human rights law.
Inhoud
This course is designed for students interested in international studies, international law, human rights, peace and conflict resolution, international politics and international development. Students taking this course are expected to have taken Human Rights Principles and Institutions. The major part of this course will deal with substantive rights, related to both civil and political rights, and economic, social and cultural rights. In this part of the course significant attention will be paid to the differences and similarities between civil and political rights on the one hand and economic social and cultural rights on the other. Also the distinction between absolute and relative rights will be discussed, and in this context the system of limitations will be introduced and explored. The course will also explore a number of relevant current developments and challenges in regard to the protection under international human rights law.
