After this course:
- The student has gained a greater understanding of the historical and contemporary scope and aims of criminological theory and its relations with other species of social scientific thinking.
- the student has insight in issues that may arise as a result of law enforcement practices from social scientific perspectives.

Content
Our main objectives are to enable students to address theoretical claims in a critical and reflective manner and to deploy concepts in the development of their own research work. The course considers certain key dimensions within the field of criminology, broadly understood - the interpretation of deviance in context; the structuring of the field by inequalities and hierarchies of various kinds; issues of institutional change; and questions of cross-cultural and transnational variation and convergence. We then look at the application of these perspectives by analysing contemporary global media cases and by specific examples of current problems of security and social control.
