Inhoud
Media don’t exist in isolation. They function in a network of other media, maintaining all sorts of relations. This is all the more true for our contemporary, mediatized culture and society. Media are increasingly used to stage reality, and moreover become subjects of that staging themselves. This course introduces you to the discourse on media relations from a merely theoretical perspective, but with an eye to the historical dimensions. We will see what theoretical concepts have been developed to distinguish between and analyze different kinds of media relations. How can media be combined? How can media content or form be transferred from one medium to another? How do media refer to one another? We will not only focus on intermedial concepts, but we will also address some important recurring themes in the discourse on media relations. How do we define media specificity and media borders? How do media represent each other or even stage each other? How do media work together to build complex fictional worlds? How can we understand our use of media from the perspective of human-technology relationships? These themes, topics and concepts are presented in a reader that has been developed for this course and that will be discussed and elaborated upon in the lectures. Finally, the course will introduce you to the Library Guide Media Studies. Through a series of modules you will, step by step, practice your skills in systematically searching for academic literature.

This course is part of Core Profile 1 of the BA Media and Culture in English.
