Assessment goals of the course
The course objectives translate into the following assessment goals:
The U‐TEAch student is able to…
A. Design, plan, implement, evaluate and redesign a learning activity (lesson) that either utilizes culturally responsive teaching strategies or enables learners to effectively perceive a subject issue from another cultural perspective. (Module 1)
B. Describe and analyse the goals and philosophies of (a part of) the Dutch national system or International Baccalaureate system for secondary education and use generic criteria to compare this with the educational system of the host country (e.g. Norway, St Maarten, South Africa) of the second placement. (Module 2)
C. Carry out a case study of how learners of different cultural background are approached interculturally within the school using (simple) ethnographic tools or cultural models, and suggest educational strategies to enhance intercultural understanding. (Module 3)

The course consists of three modules, focusing on different areas of international and cross cultural education. These modules are 1) Multicultural Teaching, 2) Educational Systems, and 3) Personal Acculturation. The aim by the end of the course is to have insight into cultural differences in a school and teach responsively to these, being able to compare and analyse different educational systems, and to have insight into your own acculturation while working abroad or moving schools.
As the course progresses, the learning path mirrors the model of Uri Bronfenbrenner and begins with the student teacher as a teacher in a Dutch context, understanding what shapes culture and how they can maximize this to design culturally responsive or engaging lessons to both culturally diverse and homogenous groups of pupils. Next the focus zooms out from the classroom setting to the macro view of how educational systems are devised, and how this reflects the norms and values of that society. Finally, while abroad, the student teacher focuses on themselves as a learner and reflects on their personal and professional acculturation in a new foreign context while teaching and living abroad, looking at culture shock, cultural synergy, and teaching in a culturally diverse setting.
