Students will gain knowledge about solar cell physics, technology and applications and will thus be able to better appreciate the rapid developments in the field of photovoltaic solar energy. The course offers insight in solar cell physics and technology by addressing semiconductor physics and operation of basic p-n solar cell devices, as well as frequently used processing methods, preparation and operation of wafer based and thin film solar cells. It also offers new developments in this field focusing on the application of nanotechnology. 
Inhoud
The following topics will be covered:
  1. Basic physics of semiconductors
  2. p-n junctions (including applications in devices such as solar cells and LEDs)
  3. Semiconductor processing (chemical and physical deposition, etching, oxidation)
  4. Thin film solar cells, including tandem cells
  5. Selected other semiconductor materials and devices and new development
  6. Solar cell performance
  7. Experience solar cell research in practice by laboratory visit.
