After this course, the student:
  • will be familiar with the multi-disciplinary character of Global Sustainability Science and will be aware of the opportunities as well as the limitations in doing multi-disciplinary research.
  • will have gained insight in the most important basic research methods to conduct empirical research in the field of Sustainability Sciences
  • will be able to apply both quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • will be aware of the opportunities as well as the limitations of quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • will be able to design research approaches with reference to social as well as a natural sciences, and
  • will have gained experience in presenting your research results through written communication
 During the course, you will furthermore develop the following academic skills:
  • Processing and analyzing information: This course will pay ample attention to the process of gathering, processing, and analyzing information or data in order to conduct academic research.
  • Knowledge of research tools: This course will have the student going through a basic set of research tools, commonly used in sustainability science. S/he will work with Excel, Nvivo, SPSS, structured and semi-structures interview and questionnaires.
  • Teamwork and academic discussion: All the assignments will be made in pairs, meaning that students will need to collaborate with a peer.
Inhoud
This course deals with the methodological aspects of empirical research. Empirical research uses empirical evidence, which means that you gain knowledge through observation or experience. In this course, students will learn how to develop a good research question and how to answer this question in a structured and verifiable manner by means of observation, measurement and analyses.
