Inhoud
This course deals with the efforts to (re)build political arrangements and institutions in periods after violent conflict (the ‘post-war’) both at a national and local level. It looks at the efforts to (re)construct state institutions and to build democratic regimes, and explores the inherently political and conflictive nature of these processes. Through diverse case studies from the past decades students learn to critically analyse processes of international intervention and political change.
The three main fields of analysis are (a) assumptions, strategies and roles of international actors, (b) their interactions with local elites, and (c) the characteristics of national and local political contexts in which these actors operate. Students will, among other activities, screen documentaries , and analyse policy documents (e.g. UN declarations). The course uses literature on political development, (international) policy analysis, and on the growing body of literature critically assessing efforts by international and local actors of social engineering after war.
