Main learning objectives:
After successfully completing this elective, the student can:
  1. Assess the quality and usefulness of pharmaoeconomic evaluations
  2. Independently set up and perform a pharmacoeconomic analysis

Sub-learning objectives:
After successfully completing this elective, the student can:
  1. Describe the reimbursement structure and financing of the Dutch health care system
  2. Describe the role and necessity of pharmacoeconomics in this system from the perspective of various stakeholders
  3. Explain the basic concepts of pharmacoeconomics
  4. Distinguish and name types of economic analyses
  5. Calculate transition probabilities and construct parametric survival curves
  6. Indicate which types of costs should be included in an economic analysis and how these costs should be measured and valued
  7. Indicate which effect measurements are relevant in an economic analysis
  8. Describe the difference between direct and indirect utility measurement
  9. Calculate incremental cost-effectiveness or cost-utility ratios
  10. Explain the principle of discounting

  12. Explain the importance of sensitivity analysis
  13. Perform a one-way and a probabilistic sensitivity analysis and scenario analysis
  14. Distinguish the main types of models
  15. Build and analyze a cost-utility model, including sensitivity analyses, time-dependent transition probabilities and extrapolation of survival data.
Content
The course is centered around the project of independently conducting a pharmacoeconomic analysis. At the same time, the block provides a broader picture of the place of such pharmacoeconomic analyses within the broader health policy field. At the beginning of the course, each group of 3-4 students is assigned a different health technology case. The groups will be guided step-by-step to perform a full pharmacoeconomic analysis, as described in the learning objectives. While they learn the theoretical background through lectures, seminars and practicals, they can immediately apply the acquired knowledge in the project assignment. The project assignment will be documented in the format of a scientific article. This approach was chosen for three reasons:
  • There is a lot of international scientific literature that can function as examples and comparative material.
  • In this way, the students learn to better understand literature in this field.
  • The students learn to articulate an investigation briefly, concisely and accurately.

In addition to the article, the project assignment is also shared with peers via a group presentation. Ultimately, on the basis of the articles produced, the knowledge and understanding of individual students will be tested in an oral exam. The oral can include all material taught throughout the course.
