The aim of this course is to acquaint students with a variety of topics and research methods used in multidisciplinary research conducted in the social sciences. To this end, faculty members of the U.S.E., Psychology, and Sociology departments present specific topics related to their own research and/or key journal articles in a seminar-style format.
At the kernel of multidisciplinary research in the social sciences are empirical methods. Thus, the course logically places a particular emphasis on methods such as experiments, surveys, and econometrics. These methods will be highlighted in the seminars
Doing Multidisciplinary Research in the Social Sciences represents the final course in the Economics & Social Sciences Minor. Thus, students should see the research-oriented nature of the course as an invaluable opportunity to consolidate skills for the writing of a Bachelor thesis in period 4.
Learning objectives
At the end of the course, the student is capable of:
- Understanding that doing multidisciplinary research is not “mixing” disciplines, but rather taking insights from other disciplines while addressing research questions relevant to the departure discipline
- Doing multidisciplinary research from the perspective of an economist, a sociologist, or a psychologist
- Adopting a critical perspective on the strengths and limitations of the multidisciplinary approach
- Designing an experiment to test a theory
- Applying quantitative research methods in economics & social sciences
- Working at an academic level within a team
- Deriving policy implications for the real-world based on behavioral insights
Format
Seminars centered around themes that cut across economics and social sciences.
Assessment method
- Written assignment (40% of the final grade)
- Presentation (60% of the final grade)
The overall grade will bedetermined according to a written assignment, a presentation, and students' preparation and engagement in the in-class discussions .
Effort requirements
Attendance of at least 85% of the meetings and active participation in the discussions.

Knowledge at the level of social science courses of the first two years of the Economics Programme with the approved optional minor in Social Sciences is assumed (Introduction to the Social Sciences ECB1ISS, Sociological Theories ECB2ST and Psychology and Economic Behavior ECB2PEB).
