Specialisation Programme Veterinary Epidemiology

Course goals
At the end of this course, the student:
  1. has a basic knowledge of the broad field of economics;
  2. is able to discuss the role that economics play in the field of animal production;
  3. understands the economic decisions made by consumers, by knowing the forces influencing consumer behaviour, the concept of market demand and the concept of elasticity of demand;
  4. understands the supply side of the market, as reflected in resource use and production response;
  5. is familiar with the basic principles of veterinary epidemiology;
  6. is able to perform basic test evaluations and risk analysis;
  7. is able to organize and perform simple variants of veterinary epidemiological studies;
  8. is able to use theoretical concepts of veterinary epidemiology in practice;
  9. is able to understand and evaluate epidemiological publications.
Other learning goals depend on students choice of specialisation courses.

Specialisation programme
Each student is expected to attend so called ‘specialisation courses’ Each specialisation consists of obligatory and free to be chosen courses. These lecture days of choice should consice of (advanced) epidemiological or statistical courses. Listed below are the courses per specialisation. 
 
Veterinary Epidemiology (VE) – program director Prof M Nielen
7 EC with the following obligatory courses
Economic Principles and Concepts for the Veterinary Sciences (2.5EC)
Advanced Veterinary Epidemiology (4.5EC)
 
Add other courses  to reach the total amount of EC’s for the specialisation programme such as;*
Applied Economic Modelling for the Veterinary Sciences (3EC)
Molecular Epidemiology in Infectious Diseases (1.5EC)
Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases (3EC)

* These other courses do not need to be within the same specialisation, but they do need to:
  • be epidemiological courses and/or statistical courses and/or;
  • be for PhD students with a TSA, part of the obligatory programme specific courses at the PhD program the student is enrolled in.
