Course goals
Learning goals:
After completing the course the student:
1. is able to describe the ion channels and pumps that are involved in the cardiac action potential;
2. is able to explain the principle 'calcium-induced-calicum-release' in relation to cardiac pump function; 
3. is able to explain how the function of the heart is regulated, which factors are important to adjust and regulate metabolic demand and supply, and how the heart can compensate a disbalance in these metabolic processes;
4. is able to explain the meaning of abberations in different types of vessels, in terms of maintaining blood stream; 
5. is able to explain that edema is caused by changes in the liquid transport processes within the capillary system;
6. is able to explain the relation between water-electrolyte balance and the acid-base balance;
7. is able to explain the relation between kidney function and blood pressure;
8. has achieved knowledge and insight in normal structure and function of the heart, circulatory system, and kidneys, and how these organs collaborate to maintain homeostasis of the 'milieu interieur'.
9. recognise the phases in the ECG and can explain the development of an ECG, based on elecrophysiological knowledge; 
10. is able to describe the function of the healthy kidney in terms of filtration, secretion, re-absorption;
11. is able to explain the regulation of the ECV, sodium, and osmolarity; 
12. has a basic knowledge of the cardiac, vascular, and renal anatomy.

Course content
In this course the physiology and pathophysiology of organs (heart, vasculature and kidney) are taught including their relations and interactions. Students can watch online lectures which is organized in small e-modules provided in Blackboard. Students are encouraged to complete written assignments that are available on Blackboard. This level of understanding is required to pass the end of course exam. The coordinator is available to answer questions and to discuss the assignments.

E-modules based on online lectures provided by Duke University are the main source of information.
Additional information can be read in Human Physiology, 5th- 6th edition, Silverthorn Pearson 2010.
