Course goals
After completing the course the student knows:
1. the basic principles of heart structure, excitation and contraction;
2. the sex differences in cardiac disease and the underlying mechanisms;
3. the structural, contractile and electrical remodeling processes occurring in the diseased heart and their role in the development of arrhythmias;
4. the structure, biosynthesis and function of microRNAs in general and the role they play in regulating gene expression in cardiovascular (patho)physiology;
5. the relation between altered adrenergic signaling and arrhythmias in cardiomyopathy;
6. the role of calcium and calcium-dependent proteins in the normal heart and changes in the abundance, function and regulation of these proteins related to cardiac disease;
7. the molecular basis of acquired and inherited arrhythmias;
8. different molecular, cellular and animal models used in the study of the healthy and diseased heart;

At the end of this course the student is also able, at an academic level, to:
9. work out a research assignment on a cardiovascular topic and describe experiments that will address the research question;
10. present and discuss the results of a research assignment in front of peers.

Course description
The course aims to familiarize master students with different molecular and cellular approaches applied in the study of the healthy and diseased heart. Lectures will be given on various aspects of cardiac disease, such as sex differences, microRNA expression, Ca2+ regulation and adrenergic signalling. Moreover, the molecular basis of arrhythmias (either inherited or acquired) will be featured from different view points as well. This theoretical part will be concluded with a written exam. Students will further have to work on an assignment on one of these subjects and present their results in both a written report and presentation.

Mandatory for students in own Master’s programme:
BoD students: This course is one of the specific cardiovascular BoD-courses. Additional to the mandatory Kick off course, BoD students should accomplish 12 EC with specific (cardiovascular) BoD courses.

Optional for students in other GSLS Master’s programme:
Yes, for students with a cardiovascular interest

Prerequisite knowledge
Basic understanding of cardiovascular physiology (level: Silverthorn's Human Physiology book, seventh edition) is expected.
