Course goals
HRM:
After completing the human resources management (HRM) course, students:
  • Understand the difference between best practice and best fit HRM strategies.
  • Can explain how HRM in general, and individual HR practices in specific, contribute to organizational performance.
  • Can explain the impact of organizational strategy on HRM practices and choices.
  • Can explain and apply the various steps during the recruitment and selection phase, and make informed decisions on (evidence based) recruitment and selection techniques.
  • Understand and use the concept of competency and related concepts.
  • Explain the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality, sometimes referred to as the Big5.
  • Understand the key elements that make experiences developmental, and use this understanding to improve organizational practices in order to facilitate learning and development.
  • Understand how employment relationships are changing (in terms of expectations towards one and another) and how this affects the role of learning and development.
  • Will be acquainted with various motivation theories, and understand how managers and organizations can use these theories in practice.
  • Understand the basic building blocks of performance management.
ICT:
After completing the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) course, students will be able to:
  • Understand the use and value of IT in relationship to organization strategy.
  • Understand how IT can be implemented in organizations
  • Be able to identify the important aspects that have to be dealt with when implementing ICT solutions
  • Understand the main features and principles of an IT architecture and relate them to business needs and priorities.
  • Understand and explain the use of different types of large scale backoffice systems like ERP/CRM in organizations
  • Make a structured, motivated analysis of the use of IT in an organization
  • Understand and use/apply the 4 different types of IT and business Alignment as described by Henderson & Venkatraman
  • Explain how IT can function as a driver or enabler for organizations.
  • Understand and use/apply IT governance rules as described by Raines (“Raines Rules”)
  • Make a first-cut motivated risk analysis of a large IT project, using Boonstra’s inventory of project risks
Content
Future forward has 2 separate parts: Human resources management (HRM), and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

HRM focuses upon how HRM-policies and practices contribute to organizational performance.

Assessment:
  • Final exam (100%)
ICT for Business focuses upon the use and value of IT in relationship to organization strategy, and the important aspects that have to be dealt with when implementing ICT solutions. Each of the courses will make up 50% of the total grade.
