Course info
Course codeB-MIBID
EC7.5
Course goals
At the end of the course, you will have a profound understanding of bio-inspired system design and are able to:
  • understand the intricacies of bio-inspired design at a system level
  • have a basic understanding of the bio-inspired design process
  • apply generic design skills (develop a design brief & product requirements, basic ideation & sketching, iterate design steps)
  • apply specific nature-inspired design techniques to a system design assignment, and use the results to develop solutions at the systems level
  • critically reflect on the methods and techniques used
  • describe the added value of biology/biologists in bio-inspired design processes
  • develop a more nuanced view on bio-inspired design (improve/study the implications of working with biodesign)

Furthermore, you will practice to:
  • connect disciplines and supersede these through integration (transdisciplinarity)
  • work in groups and collaboratively execute a structured systems design process
  • receive and give feedback to your peers
  • report your findings in posters and a report
Final result
Report: 50%
Poster: 10%
Final Presentation: 10%
Individual critical reflection: 30%

Content
In this course, you will learn how to design (parts of) a system using bio-inspired design methods & techniques.

You will receive workshops to practice the use of bio-inspired techniques and apply these to a specific design case.

You will work together in groups of about 4 people with different educational backgrounds.

Over the course we will pay attention to:nature-insipired techniques for design and evaluation of design, including design principles, roadmapping, circular BMC and surroundings scans.
