Course goals

After completion of the course, the student should have a profound understanding of

1)  The impact of fungi in nature and for mankind

2)  Mechanisms underlying the role of fungi in nature and for mankind

3)  Recent developments in fungal biology 

 

At the end of the course, students should be able to

4)  Define questions related to a presentation or a research article

5)  Interview a specialist in the field addressing research questions, background, experimental design, future perspectives and societal impact

6)  Make a summary of a scientific presentation

7)  Discuss experimental set ups of fungal research

8)  Discuss the implications of research in the field of fungal biology for the research field and society

Content
Content
The aim of this course is to discuss and understand principles of the ecology, physiology, molecular biology, developmental biology of fungi and biotechnology with fungi. To this end, students will make assignments, discuss articles, have lectures, participate in the annual meeting of the section Mycology of the Royal Netherlands Society for Microbiology, make summaries of scientific presentations, and interview an expert in the field of fungal biology.
 
Literature/study material used
Participants will read selected articles and do their own literature search.
