B-MEBFBDIV
Fungal Biodiversity
Course info
Course codeB-MEBFBDIV
EC3
Course goals
After completing the module the student is able to:

  • understand identification of fungal species based on morphology and DNA phylogeny.
  • understand fungal classification system, systematics, and the use of online tools for fungal identification.
  • understand applied aspects of fungal biodiversity in industry, medical mycology and plant pathology .
  • be able to prepare fungal material for microscopic examination and identification.
  • be able to interpret morphological and molecular results for identification.
  • be able to isolate DNA, do PCR and conduct online BLAST, and confirm results based on morphology.
  • to have knowledge on isolation techniques (soil, plants and dung).
Content
This course gives a concise overview of the biodiversity of the Fungal Kingdom. The course focuses on systematics (Oomycetes, Chytridiomycetes, Zygomycetes, Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, Deuteromycetes) and general ecology of fungi, as well as related topics such as soil mycology and diagnostics of plant pathogens. Both visual and molecular recognition methods will be discussed and practical hands on experience will be gained in the recognition and isolation of fungi.
There is overlap with the course Food and Airborne Fungi. Therefore, a student can only participate in one of the courses.
