Course goals
This course offers knowledge and insights, and practices academic and professional skills of effective communication, influence and leadership, which will help students to develop into successful academic professionals who can employ their expertise optimally in a wide range of fields. Specifically, after completion of the course, students will have acquired/expanded their knowledge, experience and skills in the following areas:
-       Knowledge and understanding of the main theories and empirical findings on effective interpersonal communication, communication in groups, and leadership;
-       Experience and practice in (effectively) communicating in various interpersonal and group settings;
-       The ability to reflect on their own thoughts, feelings and actions in general, and their own active part in the course and outcome of interactions in particular.

Relationship between assessment and learning goals

Assessment will occur in two ways. A written exam at the end of the course, consisting of a combination of multiple choice and open ended questions, will respectively test knowledge and understanding of the assigned literature. An individual report analyzing and reflecting on the course experiences will test students' reflective ability and their training of communication skills. Because individual students' gains from the work group meetings depend heavily on the presence and active participation of fellow students, both attendance of the work group meetings and active participation therein are required.

Content
A series of lectures offers theoretical and empirical insights into effective (interpersonal and group) communication and influence from a social psychological perspective. These lectures serve as a guide to and deepening of the literature for self-study that will be the subject of a written exam. A complementary series of workgroup meetings will offer ample opportunity to put what was learned into practice and improve one's skills in various settings. Students will write an individual analysis of and reflection on their own experiences in these practice sessions and the course as a whole.
