Course goals
After completing the internship, students will have:
  • demonstrated the ability to integrate previously learned theory, methodologies and empirical knowledge into learning experiences at the organisation;
  • acquired skills for future professional practice;
  • developed a professional and academic working attitude;
  • learned to reflect on the internship and their academic and professional experiences;
  • acquired and shared new knowledge for the benefit of the internship organisation and their own development;
  • learned to write concise and professional reports;

The internship report is the most important assessment of the students' academic and professional development, in which they describe their experiences with and reflections on the internship. The internship report will be assessed by the academic supervisor and an independent second assessor, after the local supervisor has checked the validity of the statements therein. The student's professional development is guided by means of peer review and supervision meetings, an interim evaluation and a final assessment of the learning process by the local supervisor. In the local supervisor's final evaluation, the supervisor provides a grade that helps to determine the final grade. Students are primarily responsible for their own professional development, assisted by contributions from fellow students, the academic and the local supervisor. In the internship report, students demonstrate their ability to provide a concise and academically grounded description of their activities during the internship and their resulting professional development.
Content
Students are primarily responsible for finding and being accepted by a suitable placement organisation. The Clinical Psychology department maintains a database of internship organizations that are part of its regular network. However, students are also expected to actively search for a placement that meets the requirements. New placements must be approved beforehand by the internship coordinator.

The internship is a study component in which students do an active professional internship in the field of clinical psychology. During the internship, students learn to integrate theory, empirical knowledge, methodologies and their other academic skills into professional practice. It is important for Master's students to learn to reflect on their academic, professional and personal qualities. As a future professional, students are expected to demonstrate considerable self-management skills and be ready for the labour  market. Students will do their internship at an organization for basic or specialized mental healthcare (including medical psychology and rehabilitation departments). The program offers the opportunity to do either a clinical internship or a research internship related to mental healthcare. Work performed on a clinical internship can include diagnostics, treatment or needs assessment. During the internship, students will practice professional skills in these fields and, in doing so, start to develop a professional and academic attitude. Students are generally supervised by a healthcare psychologist or an experienced academic psychologist within the organization. The clinical internship also prepares students for a healthcare psychologist or psychotherapist post-Master's programme. Pay careful attention to the previous education requirements for both programs: see http://www.rinogroep.nl. The clinical psychology research internship is intended for students wishing to familiarise themselves with research-related activities and roles. Students actively participate in an ongoing mental healthcare-related research project at an organization, gaining experience with professional and academic skills connected to different phases of the empirical cycle, such as literature review, data collection, data analysis and reporting research results. Students are supervised by an experienced academic professional within the organization, preferably an experienced psychologist.
