Relation between course aims and assessment

At the end of the course you will be asked to hand in a reflection dossier (80% of the total grade). A central theme of the dossier is your personal reflection on the activities and assignments of the course and the choices you made regarding the type of internship (or clinical skills lab),  research (thesis) and the elective part of the Master’s programme. By describing your professional development, drawing implications from this and making clear what your next steps in your professional career are, you will develop a pro-active attitude towards the possibilities the labour market offers you (learning goal). A series of lectures offered at Faculty level will support this learning goal. These lectures will focus on questions related to ethic and scientific integrity that are relevant to your future as an Academic Professional. Besides, in the reflection dossier you have to specify your ideas about your future work, how the choices you made in this Master’s year are related to this and what (kind of) activities you plan to do in the two years following  graduation. A job application training (which is also offered at Faculty level) will help you to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the course, you are able to express who you are as a professional (learning goal) and what consequences you should draw from these for your future professional identity [lifelong learning] (learning goal).
Furthermore, by a series of lectures, you will gain sufficient knowledge of ethical issues that could apply in either research or practice in the field of clinical child, family and education. In the reflection dossier you will reflect on how you have dealt with the encountered ethical dilemmas in your internship (or clinical skills lab)  and thesis research. You need to specify what kind of important lessons could be drawn from these that are relevant for your work as a behavioural scientist. After finishing this part, you will have knowledge of the current ethical norms that could apply in research (learning goal) and practice (learning goal), and you will learn the value of recent scientific developments in analysing and solving practical problems (learning goal).
A specific part in the master’s programme Clinical Child, Family and Education Studies are a series of lectures related to youth and law that will be examined by an examination (20% of the total grade). After passing the examination you will have sufficient basic knowledge of legal procedures and aspects, in order to perform effectively as a behavioural scientist (learning goal). Besides, students following the regular track, containing an internship instead of a clinical skills lab, meet the NVO’s entry requirements.

Inhoud
The Master’s programme Clinical Child, Family and Education Studies teaches you to use academic knowledge and skills in analysing, resolving, implementing and evaluating complex practical problems and research questions related to parenting and education. In this course you will learn to connect scientific knowledge and practical problems, develop an awareness of contextual determination of practical problems and how to work towards developing your own professional identity.

The Academic Professional course (which runs throughout the year) effectively integrates the various course components of the Master’s programme. The underlying aim is to help you develop as an academic professional – a critical thinker who is able to connect theory and practice and is able to use the most up-to-date academic knowledge and basic professional skills to identify problems in societal contexts and contribute to possible solutions.

Ethics and job market orientation are central themes of the course:

Ethics (1,5 EC) involves academic and professional integrity. After completing this course, you will have an understanding of and be able to reflect on the importance of academic integrity in carrying out academic research in the social sciences. Professional integrity entails the key aspects of ethics in the work as a behavioural scientist. As our graduate you are able to participate in a societal context dealing with different stakeholders and act academic and with integrity.

In the job market orientation part of the course (1,5 EC) the central theme is (developing your) professional identity:  in this part of the course you will work on reflection on and formulating your own opinions. The key question is: “Who am I, and what is my professional identity?” At the end of the course, you will be able to express your professional identity in writing (and orally). In addition, by developing your own competencies and drawing implications from these for your professional identity, you will be well prepared for the first steps on the job market. You will learn to recognise the value of lifelong learning.

Juveniles and Law (1 EC): A specific part of the Master’s programme Clinical Child, Family and Education Studies, and provided as part of this course, is Juveniles and Law: This intensive, one day-course will offer a concise introduction to some of the most relevant and most typical aspects of children and the law in the Netherlands. In Dutch, this variety of aspects is referred to as 'Jeugdrecht'. You will be informed about the most important, recent developments, always with perspective on relevant international and European legislation and with comparisons with other countries. In short, you will acquire knowledge and understanding of the legal aspects of working with children, youth, and their parents or guardians.

Reflection dossier (1 EC): in the reflection dossier you will connect scientific theories and practice (acquired in the internship (or Clinical Skills Lab) and in the Masterthesis). Key aspect of writing the dossier is reflection on the job market orientation and ethics (academic and professional integrity).
