The course focuses on constructivist, situated, cognitive and socio-cultural approaches to learning. These approaches emphasize the importance of interaction processes in learning and the role of artifacts or tools in the authentic learning environment. Theoretically, several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the learning effects of interaction processes in social or collaborative learning situations, such as externalizing knowledge, active engagement, self-explanation,transactive memory and distribution of cognitive load, negotiation, co-construction of knowledge, grounding, coordination processes, maintaining a joint problem space, (socio-)cognitive conflict, reflection, and reconstructing knowledge through critical argumentation. Research in this field focuses on the way these mechanisms facilitate learning processes and on the way these interactive learning activities can be supported by tools or arrangements in the learning situation. The effects of these processes will be analyzed and evaluated.
Upon completion of the course the student is able to:
- demonstrate, orally and in writing, the mastery of the basic concepts;
- apply theoretical concepts to evaluation of research literature;
- apply theoretical concepts to design of learning situations;
- analyze learning interaction from different perspectives.
