After completing the course, the student:
  • knows the basic techniques used for computer animation such as representations of orientations, blending, interpolation, kinematics, data-driven character animation using machine learning and can rely on these techniques in reading and writing about computer animation.
  • will have practical knowledge of the equipment and tools needed to produce realistic character animations such as motion capture, motion editing tools such as Motionbuilder and rendering tools that use animations such as Maya or 3D Studio Max or will be able to develop a character animation software from scratch using graphics libraries such as OpenGL.
  • knows how to read research papers in the field of computer animation, can summarize the content of these papers and give a presentation about this or write an essay about it.
Assessment
The participants will get a grade for the research paper presentations (R), a grade for the movie or the software project (P), and the grade for the essay (E).
The final grade is then calculated as 0.3*R + 0.3*P + 0.4*E.
However, in order to complete the course, there is an additional restriction that E>=5.

A repair test requires at least a 4 for the original test.
Inhoud
The course Computer Animation discusses a variety of topics related to computer animation, such as: motion capture, blending, kinematics, data-driven character animation, and more.
There is also a visit to the motion capture lab, as well as an animated movie project that uses motion capture.
The course is concluded by a project festival (movies and software projects).

Course form
The course will consist of a combination of lectures by the teacher, and presentations by the participants of the course about a given research topic.
During the course, participants will also make a short animation movie or software project in teams.
Finally, the participants have to write an essay about a predefined animation research topic, such as facial animation, body animation, gestures, motion concatenation, data-driven character animation and more.

Literature
A selection of papers handed out during the course.
