The focus of this course is on the integrated management of business processes as they move through the various phases of the process life-cycle (i.e. identification, discovery, analysis, redesign, implementation, and monitoring/control).
The particular focus is on the use of IT as the prime enabler. After taking this course, you will be able to:
  • explain the organizational merits of process thinking, in particular in contrast to traditional management thinking;
  • identify the different phases in the management of business processes;
  • model complex business processes with a formal modeling technique, taking (partly) informal requirements into account;
  • communicate process designs to both end-users and IT specialists;
  • use process design theory to develop improved alternatives to existing processes;
  • analyze the conformance and performance of process designs before they are put into production;
  • understand how business processes can be analyzed on the basis of analyzing event logs;
  • describe and understand the main features of process-aware information systems (workflow technology).
Assessment
The overall grade for this course will be determined on the basis of the following:
  • A group assignment, which amounts to 40% of the overall grade for this course.
  • An individual exam, which amounts to 60% of the overall grade.
A repair test requires at least a 4 for the original test.

Prerequisites
The following background information will serve you well during this course:

  • data / object modeling (e.g. UML class diagrams)
  • logic and set theory
  • basic queuing theory.

Course form
This course consists of lectures and instructions (i.e. working lectures).
he goal of the lectures is to illustrate the exam material, to provide relevant context, and to reflect.
The lectures will also be used to explain the assignments and to provide feedback on the assignments. The instructions are there to work on the group assignment and to practice with the application of the exam material.
