After completing the course, the student:
  • Has knowledge of the basic terminology and notation in calculus.
  • Can solve simple assignments involving trigonometry, differentiation, and other calculus topics.
  • Has knowledge of the basic terminology and notation in linear algebra.
  • Can solve simple assignments involving vectors, matrices, and other linear algebra topics.
  • Can invert matrices.
  • Can solve systems of linear equations.
  • Has knowledge of the basic terminology and notation in statistics.
  • Can solve simple assignments involving probability, normal distributions, t-tests and other topics in statistics.
  • Has knowledge of the basic terminology and notation in algorithm analysis.
  • Can solve simple assignments involving big-O notation, Omega-notation, and Theta-notation.
  • Can analyze the efficiency of an algorithm using summations.

 

Grading

Homework assignments during the course, plus a written exam at the end.

The final grade is the average of the homework grade and exam grade, rounded to the nearest half point. Since no half points below 6 can be given: if the grade after rounding is smaller than 6, the grade is truncated to its integer part.

The repair test requires a least a 4 for the original test.

Inhoud

The course Elementary Maths for GMT provides an overview of basic mathematics, and their relation to games and media technology. It covers most of the necessary high school and undergraduate maths that is essential for GMT. Check the website for a complete list of topics covered.

Students coming from a Dutch HBO or students coming from a bachelor program that makes relatively little use of mathematics are especially advised to take this course. Students with a science bachelor degree from Utrecht University need special permission to take this course for credits.
