The learning outcomes, together with the accompanying teaching method and assessment method, are as follows. Unless stated otherwise, all assessments are made individually per student.

(A)
The student can understand terminology and academic theory on game design and player experience. Specifically, the student has acquired an academic understanding of key concepts in (1) game analysis frameworks such as MDA, (2) player motivation, player types, and player experience modelling, (3) adaptive / personalised game experiences and procedural-content generation, (4) interactive storytelling, (5) open-ended play and interactive playgrounds, and (6) mixed-reality gaming and other novel gaming-interfaces.
-- Expert lectures & Self-study of literature
-- Assessment: Exam

(B)
The student can critically analyse game designs by relating specific game-design decisions to the intended experience of a game.
-- Expert lectures & Self-study of literature
-- Assessment: Exam

(C)
The student can analyse a so-called broken game, and can create a working prototype of a non-broken variation of such a game, using paper prototyping.
-- Practicum
-- Assessment: Evaluation of the ‘Broken game’ practicum assignment
-- Group assignment and assessment

(D)
The student can create a working prototype of an ambient play interface (i.e., a tangible play installation in the actual physical space) via the Makey Makey development kit; relating selected academic concepts to design goals via experimentation and analysis.
-- Practicum
-- Assessment: Evaluation of the ‘Makey Makey’ practicum assignment
-- Group assignment and assessment

(E)
The student can create a working prototype of a digital game (i.e., a mobile / tablet app or a PC / browser game) via software such as Scratch, Construct, or Unity; relating selected academic concepts to design goals via experimentation and analysis.
-- Practicum
-- Assessment: Evaluation of the ‘Healthy Play Better Coping’ practicum assignment
-- Group assignment and assessment

Assessment

- Exam. Individual assessment: Multiple-choice exam focused on academic theory and concepts, 50% of final grade. Minimum exam grade to pass the course: 5.5
-
Practicum assignments. Group assessment: Three hands-on game design assignments, 50% of final grade. Assignment 1: 10% of final grade. Assignment 2: 20% of final grade. Assignment 3: 20% of final grade. Minimum weighted grade for the practicum assignments to pass the course: 5.5

Points will be deducted for handing in late the practicum assignment. One point deduction within 12 hrs past the deadline, two points within 24 hours, three points within 48 hours. Later then 48 hours will result in a 1.0 for the assignment.

The repair test for the practicum assignments requires at least a 4 for the weighted average grade, plus proof of active participation in the practicum

See Blackboard of the course for the further details of the assessment, especially regarding the group assesment of the practicum assignments.
