This course is about the foundations of the academic study of older periods in history: antiquity, middle ages and renaissance. Students will discover that everyone believes that such foundations exist but that there are many different views on what these foundations are. The course will encourage students to reflect on possible foundations and to choose their own position in the field and to be able to defend that position.

The course has a general and a more specific part. The general part reflects on the questions what type of science the humanities represent; how the humanities are now part of the university system and what the consequences are of this situation; what the justification could be in the 21st century for the study of the humanities. The specific part reflects on problems that students will inevitably meet, whatever the track they have chosen.
