This course aims to increase your understanding of both the legal basics of human rights and the interaction with the political and practical context of societies facing armed conflict.

Human rights and conflicts are interlinked in multiple ways. This course is geared towards exploring the nexus between the two. It will do so by providing an introduction into the basics of human rights and their relation to situations before, during, and after armed conflict. We will explore a wide range of issues including the tension between the freedom of expression and the need to limit it for the sake of preventing violent conflict escalation; the responsibility to protect transitional justice in the aftermath of conflict and the rights of refugees and displaced persons. In each case the aim is to understand both the legal basics and the interaction with the political and practical context of societies facing armed conflict.
