Students will be able to apply the concepts and skills acquired in the other courses in this track to discussions on how language attitudes and language ideologies constrain and enable the teaching and learning of English globally. They will be able to critically examine education contexts, using relevant methodology, be able to join scholarly conversations surrounding multilingualism and language choice, and participate in debates on the classification of English varieties. Finally, they will be able to report on these discussions in appropriate academic English.
 
 
Inhoud
This course aims to provide a brief overview of educational and intercultural issues involved in using English as a non-native language on the continents of Europe and Asia. Topics include identity performance in popular music, multilingualism and language choice, othering and cultural representation, attitudes to teaching, norms and practices in European and Asian Englishes, with a focus on Dutch and Chinese Englishes. Lectures and tutorials will be interactive requiring students to engage in classroom debate and respond to other students' papers and presentations.

This course is part of the In-depth Courses The Social Life of English.
