They also acquire basic knowledge and understanding of some main ways in which global justice problems may be conceptualized and argued about philosophically.
Inhoud
On what should the responsibility affluent people living in developed countries have towards those living in developing countries facing serious poverty, illness and destitution, be based? Should it be based on the general moral duty to counteract preventable and avoidable suffering, the moral duty not to partake in the exploitation of the poor or the duty to create fair equality of opportunity for all? In his book, ‘Globalizing Justice: The Ethics of Poverty and Power’, Richard Miller argues that although affluent countries have a limited moral responsibility to counteract neediness as such, these countries also have a serious and robust responsibility not to take advantage of their desperate neediness. In this tutorial we will read Miller’s book, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this approach for identifying and justifying global moral duties and aim at taking a well-argued position in the globalization and justice discourse.

Students in the Master Applied Ethics who are interested in enrolling in this tutorial should contact  the lecturer of this tutorial by e-mail in the enrollment period (30 October – 26 November). Part-time students will take priority in this registration.
