Students who have passed this course:
• Possess up-to-date knowledge of both grammatical and sociolinguistic fundamentals of language contact and multilingualism
• Are capable of forming an opinion about current debates on language contact and multilingualism
• Are capable of setting up and conducting field work for the study of language contact and multilingualism
Inhoud
In this course an overview of the basic theories, research methods and insights of the sociolinguistic study of multilingualism and language contact will be presented. The role of internal, social, cognitive and cultural factors in multilingualism and language contact will be discussed, with a strong focus on ethnicity and identity. Topics include:
- foundations of the study of language contact and multilingualism
- perspectives on multilingualism and language contact from societies at large and the individual (or sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic approaches to language contact and multilingualism)
- linguistic outcomes of several types of language contact and their relation with social factors
- the role of socio-geographic factors as gender, age, social class, education, ethnicity
- the role of language attitudes and language norms
- the transmission problem
- research methodology: pros and cons and do's and don'ts of qualitative and quantitave research methods

Career orientation
The course increases the students' knowledge necessary for linguistic research.
