Inhoud
During this course, students will critically investigate the role of digital tools in doing Media, Art and Performance Studies. Together with significant benefits, these new tools also pose some big challenges for the humanities and sciences in general. Starting from a general overview of the field of Digital Humanities, its discourses, methods, tools and practices, we tackle the following key question: what does Digital Humanities bring us what we could not know without it? Does Digital Humanities radically change our research, or can it be seen as just a ‘practical’ revolution?

The discussion will be held around five topics: (1) defining DH, (2) tools in DH specific for Media, Art and Performance Studies, (3) methods and data-driven research in DH, (4) ethics and users in DH, (5) economy and funding of DH.

In the first, theoretical part of the course, students will be introduced to different perspectives on the topic, in a participatory setting. In the second, practice-based part of the course, the students select a tool or case study which they critically investigate.

At the end of the course, the students will present their final assignments, in which they position themselves within broader debates and methods of the Digital Humanities.

Career orientation:
Students will develop practical research skills pertaining to digital tools and data-driven research methodologies appropriate for current developments in the professional field and in academic research.
