1) To gain specializes knowledge of and insight into cultural analytics and data mining.
2) Students are expected to develop needed skills and expand their knowledge in programming languages that are used in the course.
3) To apply software and the use of scripts for data analysis of cultural corpora, and situate these digital methods in larger critical-cultural perspectives.
4) To show professional skills in relation to cultural analytics and present their findings to an audience composed of specialists and non-specialists.  
Inhoud
The course provides students with an introduction to the statistical programming language R, as well as with ways to understand the import of analytical software for media studies today more generally. Obtained knowledge is applied in analysing various corpora of cultural data (e.g. Twitter posts, text files), while also addressing underlying assumptions and outcomes of large data queries from a critical-cultural perspective. Used corpora include text files, images, comments and posts from social media. The course is part of the Master programme New Media and Digital Culture but is open for students from other fields who want to engage with data-related research of large cultural corpora.

Career orientation

Introduction to emerging data practices in media industries; presentation by practicioners, teaching of currently much needed skills (data practices, programming, statistical analysis).
