Theories and Concepts of Theatre, Dance and Dramaturgy introduces students to a selection of theoretical concepts and approaches useful for the analysis and interpretation of recent trends and topics in the contemporary field of European theatre, dance and performance. Starting point will be the perspective on recent developments in theatre and dance practice provided by Hans-Thies Lehmann's book Postdramatic Theatre in which he observes that the development of Western European theatre of the past decades is characterised by a general move away from drama as a means to structure theatrical performance which has led to, amongst other things, increased interdisciplinarity, new hybrid forms, new approaches to representation, as well as radical changes in spectatorial address. In this course, we will critically discuss a series of theoretical concepts: postdramatic theatre, performance & performativity, theatricality & representation, intermediality, digital culture & posthumanism and corporeal literacy. The course allows students to gain a thorough theoretical understanding of these concepts and the discourse surrounding these concepts. The course trains skills of aptly and critically reading and presenting particular discourses and/or theoretical approaches. In this respect the course relates to Performance Research Lab – Act 1.

This course can be taken, if approved by the course coordinator, as a 7.5 EC course by students started in 2014-2015 or earlier.
