After completing the course the participants:
- have knowledge about the medieval literary theory and criticism
- have insight into medieval reading strategies
- have knowledge about the major genres in the European medieval literature and have read at least one text from each genre

The modern concept 'literature' did not exist in the middle ages. This implies that when modern scholars talk about medieval literature, they are using an anachronistical term. There are several ways to cope with this problem. In this course the advantages and the disadvantages of the various approaches will be discussed and demonstrated by confronting medieval texts with modern scholarship.
