To gain insights into (aspects of) the historiography of art and the variety of methods employed by prominent art historians during the twentieth century; to understand some of the most important ambitions and aims of art historiography in the last century; to appreciate reasons for significant changes in outlook and methods in the (history of) art history.

In the 20th century art history developed greatly as an academic discipline, partly due to the seminal contributions of a number of outstanding scholars who gained wide renown and acknowledgment, even outside the field of art history itself.
During this course we will read and evaluate art historical texts by a number of prominent art historians.
