Cursusdoelen
Students will be introduced in the various disciplines that are needed when looking at the history of transmission of medieval texts: history, palaeography and codicology, book history, and philology. They will learn to find secondary literature and digital resources, to use manuscript descriptions and text editions. They will receive the tools to be able to interpret the material object of the medieval manuscript in its cultural and historical context.
Inhoud
A text, especially a handwritten text, is not a stable thing. It has a life, in which it is transformed through copying, the deletion of certain elements and the addition of others, or a shift in the context in which the text is presented. In this seminar, these transformation processes will be studied. Where was a text first copied, and how can we retrace its dissemination history? What can we learn from the physical aspects of the manuscripts it features in? What do we miss when we only work with editions and translations of our medieval sources? The seminar will focus on the early medieval period and on Latin texts. It will include a visit to the manuscript reading room of Utrecht and/or Leiden, in order to study actual manuscripts. A basic/good knowledge of Latin and some experience in the area of manuscript studies are recommended.
