This course aims to improve your conflict analytical skills by means of the in-depth case study approach. Using different conflict analytical techniques (conflict mapping, mind mapping, levels-of-analysis approach, Ragin Roadmap) we will work on specific cases of violent conflict. This course combines the theoretical and policy-related subject knowledge of Theories of Violent Conflict and Conflict, Policies and Politics in its case-application.

This course aims to improve your conflict analytical skills by means of the in-depth case study approach and the experiential learning approach.. Using different conflict analytical techniques (conflict mapping, mind mapping, levels-of-analysis approach, Ragin Roadmap) we will work on specific cases of violent conflict. This course combines the theoretical and policy-related subject knowledge of Theories of Violent Conflict and Conflict Policies and Politics in its case-application. 

Course objectives

•        To improve your conflict analytical capacities by means of the experiential learning approach.
•        To improve your ability to reflect upon your own choices and actions, to consider what is working or failing, to think about ways to improve, and based on this to make new choices and engage in new actions.
•        To improve your capacity to ‘take stock’, to scan and find your way in large amounts of information, to select and systematize information, to make an informed choice.
•        To improve your ability to ask further questions (en route) to decide on (further) delimitations.
•        To find a case that fascinates you, and to reflect on ‘what this is possibly a case of?’
•        To improve your awareness of  how a team ‘works’: how to organize choices, process, disputes, tasks. To be aware of your role in the group.
 
Learning outcomes:

After succesfull completion of this course students:
 
  • have a comprehensive understanding of conflict analytical techniques;
  • demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks;
  • deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements in the absence of complete data, and communicate their conclusions clearly to an audience of specialists and in line with academic standards.
