This is the thirdcourse of Specialisation 5: Europe: Integration and Disintegration
(English track International Relations/History).

This course examines the history of European integration. Among other objectives, it aims to give students a clear overview of the various EU institutions (such as the European Commission, European Council, the European Central Bank, etc.) and the background leading up to their creation. For this reason, the course adopts both a historio-chronological approach and a topic-oriented, theoretical approach. One key focus area is significant historic events, such as the launch of the ECSC, the failure of the EDC (1954), the formation of the Treaty of Rome (EEC and Euratom, 1957), the Élysée Treaty (1963), the Single European Act (1986), the Maastricht Treaty (1991), the various EU-expansion efforts and the Treaties of Amsterdam (1997), Nice (2000) and Lisbon (2009). Another key emphasis will involve an examination of more thematic topics, such as relations within the multilateral EU frameworks (the Berlin-The Hague-Brussels triangle, for example), the determination of national standpoints in European negotiations (with particular attention to the Netherlands) and the EU as an actor (or not) in the international system. Specific themes, including social market economics, monetary union and the Eurozone, the democratic legitimacy of the EU and opportunities and roadblocks affecting political integration, will be studied in-depth. Attention will also be devoted to current affairs and theory development.
