This is the first course of Specialisation 5: Europe: Integration and Disintegration (English track International Relations).

Ever since the idea of ‘Europe’ was born, opinions have varied regarding the question of what Europe is or should be, where its borders lie and whether there is such a thing as ‘European identity’. This course is directed at the conceptual history of Europe, with a focus on the twentieth century. The key focus lies on the notion that European history is a process driven by conflicting Grand Designs – ideas on and visions of the future of Europe. Over the course of history, various meanings and normative connotations have been assigned to the idea of ‘Europe’ and associated concepts, such as ‘Central Europe’ and the ‘German Question’. The fundamental assumption is that these Grand Designs often cannot simply be attributed to one or more states, but are more often buoyed by moral convictions, cultural values and transitional coalitions and networks, in which individuals, states (or sections of government organisations), (European) institutions and non-state-based actors all play a role and use their Grand Designs to set institutional developments in motion.
