Inhoud
A number of thematic issues will be dealt with in this course, which will highlight the role of language variation as a resource, and a locus of conflict, within intercultural communication. These include pragmatics and cultural norms, language spread and shift, language attitudes, nativeness and standardness.  Lectures and workshops will be organised around two different focal points:
1. language contact and conflict in world Englishes,
2. the spread and use of world Englishes in popular music.
In addition to writing an exam essay on one of the issues above, students will be required to give one or more presentations on these topics. If these take the form of group projects, students will be expected to report on the level of cooperation within their groups. They will also take part in an end-of-term exam, in which they will be able to apply their theoretical knowledge of sociolinguistic variation to specific varieties of English.
