Inhoud
This course integrates three key areas of the study of human language: form (syntax), meaning (semantics) and use (pragmatics). In particular, it addresses those aspects of syntactic structure that have an effect on meaning composition and those aspects of meaning that have systematic effects on syntactic structure. Moreover, it places linguistic ‘form’ and ‘meaning’ in the context of ‘use’ by addressing function of meaning in a communicative setting: speakers’ and listeners’ knowledge. Interactions between form, meaning and use will be studied mainly on the basis of examples from English and Dutch.

This course is the first course in specialization Theories of English.
