Course goals
Introduction in available tools for historical and textual research in the Premodern period; critical evaluation of available tools and their implications for humanities research; hands-on experimenting with digital tools to make a digital edition
Content
Contrary to what one may think, Classical and Medieval Studies have always been at the forefront of the development of digital tools for their research: the digital comparison of texts, the development of automatic analytical tools for evaluating the relations between text versions (stemmatology), the creation of digital text editions and even the development of OCR (Optical Character Reading) facilities for the handwritten book. In this course (5 meetings, 2,5 ECTS) we will explore some of the digital tools that are available, evaluate their possibilities and shortcomings, and try them out in a hands-on session. We will discuss online data resources, such as the large collections of digital facsimiles of medieval manuscripts, digital text editions, digital palaeography and stemmatology, database systems for historical sources, analytical tools such as author-recognition tools, text mining tools or network analysis tools. How accessible are these tools to ordinary researchers such as ourselves, and how much technical background do we need to work with them?
1. Online Manuscript collections: exploration and comparison
2. Transcription and Edition: digital palaeography, digital stemmatology and digital editions
3. Databases: online resources of historical material
4. Analytical Tools: data mining, stylistic analysis, visualization tools
5. Hands-on session at Huygens ING
The course will conclude with a self-made sample of an annotated digital edition.
