The successful participant will acquire insights into how language power relations have developed over time based on evidence taken from the historical record and be able to apply this knowledge independently.
Inhoud
This course explores the politics of language from a historical perspective, specifically the way in which language has shaped, and has been shaped by forms of social power. The course will span in focus from the Middle Ages to post-colonial times and explore developments across Europe and North America. We will consider historical attitudes towards dialectal differences, the interplay between authority and processes of standardisation, and the manner in which linguistic differences between people have been dealt with in the political arena and by institutions. The course will also consider the interplay between language and politics from a historical perspective in a number of case studies, such as Belguim, Canada and Quebec and Ireland.

Early exit option
Students who are required to return to their home university by the end of December, are allowed to choose an early exit option. Students must always make individual arrangements with the course coordinator. In general, there are two options that can be facilitated:
1. Finishing the course before Christmas break, receiving 5 ECTS for the course.
2. Completing the course by 'distance learning' (extra assignments, papers etc) in the month of January, receiving 7,5 ECTS for the course.
